there are many ways to go about finding a safe combination, if it has a round dial that you turn you will hear the pins drop into place as you turn it, start clockwise then anticlockwise. if it is a combination lock apply pressure to the door while going from left to right, you will hear it click.

Just don't use very common terms, or terms that clearly point to you, like your birthday, or the name of your pet. Safest is to just randomly take a combination of letters and numbers. Although this will be harder to remember at first, it is a safer way to go.
