How do I figure out how many BTUs I need in my air conditioner?

I'm purchasing a new window unit for my living room, which is 15 x 20. How do I determine how many BTUs I need?

Minimum 8000BTUs is recommended for Window Air conditioner for the living room of 15 x 20. The BTU rating should not be too high or too less for better performance.

You need to figure the number of people, if the room is open to another room, outdoor walls, windows, is there insulation above the ceiling, and any appliances being used.

one ton of cooling 12,000 btu, rule of thumb one ton cools 500 square feet. 15 x 20 = 300, 300/500=. 6,. 6 X 12000 = 7200 btu

On average in most states 10,ooo BTU's per 100sq ft is adequate. A unit producing 30,000 Btu's should be adequate.

Lots of BTU calculators on the web. Plugging in your numbers, I get 10,100 BTUs, but it depends on various factors like insulation and sunlight.
