foil stands for First Outer Inner Last- essentially, you multiply the first term of each binomial, the outside terms, the inside terms, and the last terms and then add all of them together. For example: (a+b)(c+d) = ac + ad + bc + bd. You can substitute other experessions for a, b, c, and d

You multiply the first variable with the first variable then the first with the second, the second variable with the first variable, and the second variable with the second variable. After you add the variables in the middle if they are like terms, the inverse is finding a number that multiplied givbes you the last number and added the middle.

The FOIL method is the way in which you multiply factors together from two binomials to get a quadratic expression- multiply the First, Outer, Inner, and Last terms and add them together.

FOIL is an acronym standing for: First, Outer, Inner & Last. For example, if you had (AxB)(CxD), using foil you would get: AC + AD + BC + BD. You then combine like terms.

(a x b) (c x d) = ab x cd = abcd
(a + b) (c + d) = ac + ad + bc + bd = a (c + d) + b(c + d) = (c + d) (a + b), etc  add a comment

oops, the formatting makes it appear that abcd is multiplied by (a + b) etc. , but that was not intended. Insert a period (. ) after abcd to make it correct.  add a comment
