How do foil highlights work?

When using bleach, the more heat that is applied to the bleach, the blonder it will be. So if you use foil it can cause the bleach to heat up a lot quicker. The same thing also applies to other colors rather then blonder, if you use foil and apply heat the colors will turn out a lot more vibrant.
