1996 and newer will require a scanner. On older Fords, you can jumper terminals at the test connector and also use a test light or volt meter. You need a repair manual to identify the terminals. The parts stores have reasonably priced scanners and repair manuals. Ford has self tests for both key on engine off and engine running.

You would be better off taking it to your local dealer because they can actually just hook up the scan tool and find out if it's bad or not. Plus if it is bad then your gonna have to have repalced becuase it has to be programmed.

This may not be a "do it yourself test". The ford dealer will have specialized equipment to test the cars PCM computer. A few Ford models may have a PCM self check but each car may be different as how to accomplish this. A good manual like Chiltons should have info for the particular make or model.

Ford uses noncontinuous to test sensors during the first three minutes of operation. These check some basic sensor operation of o2 sensors, catalytic converter, and misfires. To so a full self test requires a ford compatible scan tool. There are two self tests that can be performed key on engine off (KOEO) and a key on engine running (KOER).
