if you're going to connect two computers you 1st need either an RJ45 cable or by wireless, i prefer wireless cause that the common thing people use. You need to know the workgroup name, the computer's ip address regardless of his/her OS. You need to make your wireless switch ready so it'll be easier for you to get internet connection.

A crossover Ethernet cable can be used to directly connect two computers. Many newer computers have auto crossover built in so you may be able to use a normal Ethernet cable. You can use this connection to transfer files using Windows File Sharing. You can also share a separate internet connection using Internet Connection Sharing.
