To delete an icon from your desktop you can select the icon by left clicking it. After that you hit the Delete button on your keyboard. You need to confirm the deletion by selecting 'yes' in the appearing dialog box. Alternatively, you can right click the icon and select delete from the popup menu.

You can either right-click on the icon and choose delete from the drop-down menu or drage the icon to the recycle bin. You can also click on the icon and press the delete key.
