Crickets have rough chitinous rasps on their rear legs. By rubbing their legs together they are able to create a chirrup noise in the same way a wood saw does.

The male's left wing has up to 300 "ridges" and is the file. The top of his right one is called a scraper. "Stridulation" is when they rub together.
