How can I tell if it is a velvet ant or a Texas red ant?

Red velvet ants, or cowkillers, are actually wasps. They are almost an inch long and resemble large ants. Texas red harvester(Texas red ant) does not have the furry appearance.

A velvet ant is wingless and has bee like stripes because they are wasps rather than ants. Texas red Ants are winged and a dark red color. Texas Red Ants tend to stay in groups while Velvet ants tend to remain alone.

velvet ant is not at all an ant species. they are actually wasps. the male velvet ants has wings and female ants does not has wings, so they resemble ants. they are harmless ,red hairy. texas red ants are of larger size. these ants give a powerful stinging bite which is more painful. they are mostly coloured in red and dark brown.
