Is there such thing as a flying velvet ant?

We have some flying ants in our yard.

Yes - velvet ants are actually a type of wasp. The velvet ants you see on the ground are all females and are wingless wasps. Male velvet ants have wings and look more like other types of wasp. No need to worry though, as velvet ants do not sting.

Yes there is a such thing as a flying velvet ant, they are usually called wasps. The velvet ants you see flying are male ants. To get rid of them I suggest you call a pest inspector or spray them at night, when they are vulnerable. You can read more of the info here: /mag01/feb/papr/ant.html
