How can I teach middle school students to proofread?

They don't want to take the time or the effort to do the job.

I've had some success with giving them a checklist and having them look for various things using different colored pencils to find mistakes. (spelling in green, capitalization in red, etc. ). I find giving time for proofreading in class is also helpful.

Set aside one class day to go over the importance of proofreading. Have them bring in a prepared document they did themselves. Then, you can have them proofread it first and then they can break into groups and do peer reviews. The peer reviews are important so that students can see what other students picked up on and they didn't.

One of the most effective ways is to count off for errors. You can also give a grade for a "correction copy" that requires proofreading marks and then improvements based upon these. A collected writing folder with all the drafts included can be a great tool for going through this process.
