Question by  Murasaki (21)

How can I make it easier to close wood windows?

I love to open my windows in the spring and fall but it is too hard to do so.

The window should move freely. Check to see if there's a build up dirt/grime in the sash and clean if necessary. Check for a build up of paint, and sand if required. And , check that they are painted properly to prevent swelling. Wax the sash to make opening/closing easier.

Try putting beeswax where the frame is rubbing on itself. If that doesn't work, a light sanding or a small shaving of the inside of the frames should do.

You could file off a bit of each side, just take the windows completely off and shave off a bit on each side which will allow for more room for sliding the window up and down.

They either warped and bowed or were installed wrong. If they are still under warranty, you may be able to get them replaced for free. Otherwise, time for new windows.

You can take out the windows and sand them down on the sides. Then put them back in. The moisture in the air causes the wood to swell and therefore makes it hard to open and close.

Well, it is easier to open them if you basically un-fog the windows in the fall time. Take a dryer and dry the area before opening.

Buy some bees wax and run it along the inside of the window frame, where the window meets the wood. Move it up and down a few times.
