Etymology is about linguistics and the study of language and the history of words so that the definition can be better understood. Try applying at your local colleges that have a linguistic department. There you will be able to work around others that are studying the same field and you can learn while you work.

The best thing to do would be to get a degree in Philology, the historical branch of Linguistics. From there, get into a graduate program. Focus on etymology. Once you have your graduate degree, you'll be qualified to work in academia.
