Food critics are excellent writers with journalistic flair, an interest, background and education in food and a broad base in travel, cuisine and dining to serve as a foundation for their critiques. Start locally, writing for alternative newspapers. After you have some clips, try to get some assignments with the daily paper. You might establish your own website/blog.

Submit a query letter to your local newspaper food editor with an article idea. Also, visit your local bookstore and check out the food magazines for such articles. Check magazine submission guidelines before submitting a query letter.

Someone that judges food should also be somebody that knows how to prepare food. In order to get your foot in the door, your best bet would first be to go to culinary school where you can learn what is necessary so that you have a qualified opinion. Also, take a writing class since food critics write articles about food.

The first step is honing your writing skills. It would help to have experience in a newspaper or magazine. Second, you need to become very familiar with the restaurant business as well as food. This means knowing a lot about ingredients. Then, write reviews and submit a portfolio to newspapers.

first you need to do some research online. Talk with newspapers about getting your review in there. Talk with restaurants. See if they would like a review. Once you get each place's okay, you can continue from there. If you go to the restaurant, eat what they consider their best food and see what you think.

The best way to do this is to begin by reviewing restaurants for small, local papers or college papers. You may have to pay for your own food, but you build a resume of this kind of experience. You could also become a "secret shopper" at restaurants, be paid to test the service, then write restaurant reviews for websites.

You have to have a journalism background, combined with a culinary or hotel management background (in addition to having connections).
