Most bonuses are offered at time of enlistment or reenlistment. The amount of the bonus depends on the MOS you are enlisting or reenlisting for.

The U. S. Army has a "prior service" bonus. The amount of the bonus for re-enlistment depends on previous duty, skills, education, need and other considerations. There is no set amount. New enlistees are not paid to join the Army. Most people consider it a privilege and duty. Other branches of the military also offer "prior service" bonuses and benefits.

Certain jobs in the U. S. Army, and other military branches, provide a sign on bonus. This is maily dictated by the need of the military branch and the amounts can vary from job to job and by the lenght of enlistment.

The first distinction in understanding bonuses is separating enlistment from commission. Officers may be offered bonuses during their career to stay beyond their initial committment. Enlistees may receive an incentive bonus based on skill and necessity of that invidual when completing the recruitment process. Additionally, enlistees may receive bonuses for re-enlisting during their carreer. Enlistees must make their value known.
