The best way to paint a textured wall is to utilize a specially-made paint roller that is manufactured for this type of surface. The covering has longer fibers that will allow the paint to reach well within the recessed parts of the texture. It sometimes helps also, to thin acrylic paint with a little water.

When applying primer to textured walls, use a spray on primer. Rollers or brushes damage the texture and don't give a complete coating. Also, when spraying, angle in both directions for complete coverage.

the best application for primer would be to use a thick napped roller. Keep a paintbrush handy to get into any deep spots or edges. Primers tend to be thin. When using the thicker rollers be careful not to overload roller,as it will lead to drips.

One tip for priming and painting textured surfaces is to use a deep roller, one with plush fibers that squishes a lot.

Painting textured walls and ceilings can be very difficult because of all the crevices, holes, and angles. In all my years of painting experiences, I would recommend if you are going to paint textured walls or ceilings that you spray on the paint rather then attempt to roll it on or paint it on by hand.
