That's a tricky question. Do you think that water is coming down your chimney and into your attic? Try closing the flu.

Definitely. Over time, bricks separate from the roof and could cave inward. The hole is big enough to let in rain and eventually erode a plaster ceiling in your upstairs.

If your chimney is not flashed properly and water is leaking in through the hole around it, this could certainly be causing dampness in your attic.

I think that there is possibility that it could be. Is your chiney cracked and really wet inside. You may want to get someone to come check it out.
