If they are failing to fold properly then you need to check that their is nothing blocking the joints. If the joints are clear then proceed to grease the hinges with Wd-40 or a similar product. Next look for any swollen wood and replace it as needed. These are the top 3 reasons Attic steps fail to close.

The stair track will have to be removed. The hinges need to be lubed and adjusted. Do this and reinstall the stair track. Make sure all parts line up.

Check if there are any obstructions in the hinges. Tighten all of the mountings so that loose sections aren't blocking anything. Check the frame to make sure it hasn't warped.

Try oiling them. If this does not work then see if there is anything obstructing the path for them to fold.
