It is generally caused by age. The aortic valve simply wears out due to age. Rheumatic fever can increase risk also. There is generally a 40% mortality rate without surgery, the prognosis is usually better with surgery.

Well it is caused from eating bad foods from what I hear. I don't think you can die from it. You need to exercise to prevent it.
