Pull the hair vertical away from the head, cut up to an inch, next cut the front at an angle if that's the style you are going for.

Take the hair and divide it into "layers" based on how much layering you want at the end. The layers should be bottom-hair, middle-hair, and top-hair, with any other subdivisions you like. Then, simply cut the top layer shortest, and the bottom layer longest.

To do a layered haircut begin with a good shampooing, followed by combing the tangles out of the hair. Beginning in the front, cut the bang area to about eyebrow length, then angle both sides down the side of the face. Next, comb the hair, section by section straight up and out and begin cutting. Finish up with the back.

Square layers are just bringing the hair straight up from the head and cutting a straight line across. Rule: If it doesn't reach don't cut it. If you want to keep the length of the hair, make sure to measure so you don't cut too much off and end up losing inches on the bottom.

In order to correctly layer a person's hair you have to cut less off of each layer of the hair, starting from the outside layer of the hair and cutting until the innermost layer.

Determine length of bottom layer. Cut evenly. Comb a section of hair and cut vertically from bottom layer about one finger length. After first layer, use new cuts as guides.

Either pulling hair into a ponytail on top of head or flipping your hair upside down and cutting straight across will cause your hair to be layered
