Question by  Caryn (36)

Can you recommend other books like The Outsiders?

The author is S.E. Hinton.

My suggestion for books that are similar to the Outsiders, assuming you have read all of S. E. Hinton's other books, are "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding, "Catcher in the Rye" by J. D. Salinger, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain or "Flowers of Algernon" by Daniel Keyes.

Obviously any of S. E. Hintons works, like That Was Then, This Is Now or Rumble Fish. It depends what you like about The Outsiders. Robert Cormier writes great young adult literature. Gary Paulsen, Paul Zindel and J. D. Salinger are great writers of stories that capture the issues we face while growing up.

The Pearl by John Steinbeck, The Call of the Wild by Jack London, Dark Water Rising by Marian Hale, The Giver by Lois Lowry

Any other book by S. E. Hinton is good. Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut is good if you are into science fiction. Other good choices are The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier and Nothing But The Truth: A Documentary Novel by Avi.

There are several books that are similar in style to The Outsiders. The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier is a good young adult novel. There are several books by S. E. Hinton that are also in the same genre as the Outsiders. Rumblefish, Tex, and That was then, This is now are all extremely good and well written.

There are few books you might enjoy if you liked this one, though no one can really account for taste! Here are some for you to try - I hope they go down well. 'The Giver' by Lois Lowry, That Was Then, This Is Now by S. E. Hinton, The Chocolate War (Readers Circle) by Robert Cormier.
