A fielder's choice is when instead of throwing out the batter at first base, the defender chooses to throw to another base to force or tag out a different runner.

A fielder's choice is when the fielder has the ball with men on: he has the opportunity to throw only one man out but has to choose who that will be. Example: Infielder with ground ball throws out the man running from second to third so the hitter reaches first.
