When I worked for the post office I was told the physical box belongs to the customer, but the area inside belongs to the US Post Office. Individuals are not suppose to put private notes inside a mailbox, but you can tape it to the outside.

No. Federal law prohibits anyone from putting notes or any material in a mailbox. All material must go through the USPS and contain proper postage.

Technically, no. The USPS is the only entity that can legally place mail in a mailbox, and there's a statute that forbids anyone from putting unstamped mail in a mailbox.

yes. you can put notes in a mailbox firstly, make sure the mailbox is yours; and secondly make sure that the notes you are putting are not offensive, violent or obscene. putting notes in a mailbox also signifies ownership and also territoriality. you don't have to explain yourself to others because it is none of their business.

I delievered newspapers many years ago and was always told not to put papers in the mailbox. I've always heard only mailmen should get into these boxes.

Notes placed in a mailbox must have postage attached and should be addressed to a recipient. Postal regulations prohibit using mailboxes for anything other than paid mail.

Actually you can. Many people think you can't, but that's not true. They just cannot interfere with delivery of the mail. Setting a small note in a mailbox is legal.

A mailbox is the property of the U. S. Postal Service. As such, anything left in the mailbox should have postage affixed.
