Can a lawyer charge you to cancel a legal contract?

What if it was never put into effect?

It may be bad business; but, yes, it can be done. Obviously, it has to be in the Contract to say that there will be a fee for cancellation.

He has the right to demand that you pay for the service of writing the contract. If you signed a contract that includes a cancellation fee, you owe the money.

An attorney charges for his services. A contact is "in effect" the moment it is signed by the involved parties.

It is typical for lawyers to charge by the hour (unless they are working on contingency). Therefore, a lawyer will typically charge you for the time he spends doing work for you, regardless of what the long term effect of his work-product is.
