Check to see if your town has a Legal Aid Society; if your income is below a certain level (varies from place to place), then you may qualify for free legal advice. Also, some law schools offer free "clinics" where people can get advice.

My advise would be to contact a lawyer that offers a free consultation. You can ask many of the questions you have at the consultation.
