Question by  musicbono (24)

Are there any precautions I should take when going swimming soon after getting a tattoo?

I am concerned that my tattoo will fade due to the chlorine in the pool.

The shop i work at advises that you do not go into a swimming pool treated with chlorine for at-least 3 weeks, it gives the skin above time to heal and create a few layers of skin above, unfortunately there isn't much alternative to this, all fresh tattoos that come into contact with chlorine will fade.

Don't go swimming until the tattoo has healed, the same reaction that causes bleach to remove pigment will cause your tattoo to become faded and splotchy.

You should not swim after getting a tattoo in at least 7 days. Not because it can fade, but due to infection risks. You should avoid even the sunlight in the first week. After that, you can swim in trusted places and clean water. But it's extremely recommended that you avoid anything like that in first week.

You should not go swimming until the tattoo has fully healed. Otherwise you can bleach the ink as well as possibly cause an infection.

Yes it may be a bad idea to get in a pool before the tattoo has fully healed. Otherwise the chlorine could mess it up or possibly lead to an infection.

A tattoo is a surface wound. The wound needs to heal before you submerge it in water. Therefore, you shouldn't be swimming at all until your tattoo is healed. Not only can it get infected, but the scab might not heal which means the tattoo might come off.
