European hostels are generally considered safe. It is of course common sense not to leave valuables - cash, cameras, Ipods etc - in a shared room. European hostels will have rooms ranging from two person to sixteen person rooms, not always segrated by sex. It is best to always carry valuables with you and to lock your luggage.

Yes, European hostels are safe. However, always try to see a picture of where you will be sleeping. If you book in advance, chances are that you will save a considerable amount of money and would be able to stay in a regular hotel for slightly more than a hostel.

Sometimes! When traveling in Europe, always travel in groups, and ensure that people know where you are at all times. Even the safest city in the world can be dangerous if you're unprepared.

When traveling to a foreign country that you're not aware of always do research ahead of time. Look on travel websites and look for customer reviews of all the places to stay and eat. Or if you know someone who has been there before ask them.
