is it safe to sleep at a roadside rest area?

you know those ones that are created by the highway department with bathrooms and picnic benches. are these generally safe?

No, they're not safe. Rest areas are isolated from regular street traffic in the surrounding neighborhood and highway traffic flies by too fast to notice anything amiss. Rest area attendants, if there are any, work only during the day. A car in an empty parking lot with a sleeping driver would be an easy target for thieves or worse.

I would not recommend sleeping here for an extended amount of time. If it's a short nap I think it'd be alright, always be aware.

I wouldn't. But, if you're too tired to continue to drive safely, then lock the doors, cat nap for about 5 minutes keeping a heavy duty flashlight in hand as a weapon. 1st try getting fresh air and walking a round for a bit.

No, my son stopped to use the restrooms, and was bitten by a family dog, he had to undergo the shots for prevention of Rabies.

i am sure there are some horror stories of stuff that happened there, but i think they are generally safe. there are people taking quick naps and people coming and going, so it would be pretty hard to pull off some crime without any witnesses.
