Will my Basset hound have to have a c section?

I have heard that c sections are common in Basset hounds.

Some vets will suggest that the dog get a C section right away and won't even let the dog try to push her puppies out vaginally. On the other hand there are some vets that will let the dog try to have the puppies naturally and see if she has trouble before doing a C-section.

C sections are not anymore common in this breed than in any other breed. There is always a chance of problems and a c-secton being nessiary just like in humans. You should be more concerned with the dog having back problems. In dogs with an elongated back the extra weight can cause some problems.

It depends on where the puppies are located. Most animals give birth with no complications, but if she's had problems with birth in the past, she may need one.

No, your Basset does not have to have a c-section. I personally have had bassets and watched them give birth with no issues.

C-sections are common with bassets because of the shape of the head and the length of the body. For safe delivery, a c-section is recommended.
