While it may be used successfully as a repellent for pests, it does not do much for birds. It might be poisonous for birds, but that may not keep them away. After all, rice causing birds explode from the inside when eaten never stopped birds from eating it at weddings.

Citronella oil has not been documented as being toxic to birds, although fumes are considered to be. It contains 40% geraniol and 30% citronellal. Awesome bug repellent, especially mosquitos.

I can't find anything to bear this out, and I wouldn't think it would as birds like citrus. There are gels, sticky tapes and sonic repellents available that are not poisonous, but often a plastic owl or "mooseblower" made with a tin can, twine and/or wax paper works a charm.

It does have a effect on the pests but the birds don't really get scared off by citronella oil. You will need something else.
