Black tongue is a temporary harmless black coloring of the tongue caused by bismuth sulfide being formed on the tongue. It occurs most often after taking a liquid antacid/antidiarrheal.(ie Pepto Bismol) The bismuth subsalicylate from that combines with the mouth's sulfide. This can happen if other medications have these ingredients. If this lasts more than ten days, see your physician.

Anytime a portion of the body turns black, this is a symptom of necrosis or dying tissue, and it should be examined by a doctor right away. Oftentimes with necrotic tissue, there may be no pain, as the pain receptors of the tissue are dead. The person should see if the blackness rinses away with mouth rinse first.

If you suffer from certain disorders, your doctor may prescribe pepto bismol as the course of treatment. Taking pepto bismol daily in a dose such as two tablets four times a day, tends to turn your tongue black. Your tongue will return back to its normal color after treatment.

If you tell a lot of lies, your tongue will turn black and fall out. At least that is what my mom used to tell me. I never told too many lies, so I don't know if this is true or not. Black licorice will do the same thing.
