What could cause my toe nail to turn black?

Over the last several days my toe nail has turned black.

A black toenail often results from the toe striking the end of the shoe. It doesn't have to be a painful injury for enough pressure to occur to cause the bruising. It could also happen due to a fungal infection.

A toenail can be injured from running or walking (as the nail hits the shoe repeatedly). This can cause it to turn black.

The most common cause would be poor circulation in the foot and not enough blood is getting to the toe.
