Inflammation is a process where your body responds to external threats such as germs, injuries, radiation and other. It includes swelling, reddening, pain, sometimes heat sensation. It is the way by which your body is signaling to your immune system that the tissue needs to be repaired.

Any tissue damage causes inflammation. This means that pain mediators, such as prostaglandins and bradykinin, are released, and the blood vessels become more permeable. The first process causes pain (dolor) and local warmth (calor), the second causes redness (rubor) and swelling (tumor).

A sunburn is just like any other kind of burn. A particularly bad sunburn can cause swelling and/or blistering similar to what you'd get with a second degree burn. If it's really bad, a doctor can prescribe medicated cream to assist the healing process. If it's bearable, treat it like you would any other sunburn.

When your body get badly burned or hurt it swells up. It's a coping mechanism. To help the swelling go down put something cool on the area. You may also want to take some Tylenol.
