A cat might be unable to make it to the litter box if he/she is suffering from an infection of the bladder or reproductive organs. A cat might also stop using the litter box if the brand or type of litter was recently switched and he/she does not tolerate the new litter. Another reason might be behavioral issues.

If the cat is urinating outside the box, (not spraying) it might have a urinary tract infection. Sometimes cats with a UTI will start urinating on cool surfaces, like the bathtub or litter box.

Take the cat to the vet. There is probably an infection or parasite that is making your cat lose control. It needs to be treated immediately.

The cat could have a problem with its urinary tract or bladder. When it is painful for them to go, they will just go anywhere.

If your cat is a neutered male, he is more susceptible than others to kidney problems. That could be the problem. Another cause could be just plain old age.
