More than likely your cat has crystals in his/her urine. Some cats will stay in the box for over an hour and still not go. Another sign of crystals is your cat is peeing in places other than the box. They associate the box with pain. See you vet immediately because it is easy to treat.

Your cat needs to be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. There are several reasons for feline straining including, but not limited to, constipation, urinary tract infection, blockage, diabetes or kidney problems. Medical treatment is recommended for any of these potentially serious situations.

Your cat may have a urinary tract infection or even worse, some type of blockage. Your best bet is to visit your veterinarian, and he may recommend that you change the type of food you are feeding your cat to one with a lower Ph.

Your cat could have a bladder infection. If it is not peeing, you need to take it to the vet immediately, or it could die.
