Do big cats in the wild cover their dung?

My cat has a litter box. I just wondered if the behavior is innate.

It is the nature of the domestic cat to cover its dung, there is a believe that they consider themselves very clean therefore putting dung on the open makes them shy since they live with humans. But the Big cats in the wild do not cover their dung.

It depends. Sometimes they do and other times they do not. Cats (both house and wild) use scents a lot and dung can be a form of scent marking saying "this is my area". Sometimes big cats will cover it up just to help put more scent from their paws.
