One story say's a writer nick named Willie Mays the say hey kid because he heard him saying, "say what, say who, say when" so he called him the say hey kid,another says that when he entered the league, he didn't know anyone, so he would say hey to everyone.

This is because he would always go to the plate and most likely hit a homerun. v Say hey Willie is like saying hit a homerun.
