The gas smell could be a oouple of different things. The car could be running rich, which is when more fuel is being injected than is being used, causing raw fuel in the exhaust. The smell can also be caused by an external fuel leak or an EVAP system leak. My suggestion would be to take to a qualified technician.

You could possibly have a punctured or severed gas line in your car. I remember leasing a brand new vehicle and the gas line weld broke. It was frightening as a man yelled and came to my window and said that gas was spilling out under my automobile. I made sure the tow truck driver put out his cigarette.

You could have a gas leak. It is also possible that you just spilled gas on your self when refueling. If the smell follows you, that could be the case. If not, bring your car to the auto mechanics very soon. This could be a hazard to you and the other passengers in your car.

You can smell gas for a few reasons. One is you have a leaky fuel injector, simply replace with a new one. If you have an older car, you could be running your carbureator a little rich. Simply adjust the mixture by turning a screw on the carbureator. If this doesn't work check the ouput of your fuel pump.
