Why is so much of our news dominated by sensationalism?

I can't read anything that is the truth any more.

Because that's what people are looking forward to! The gorier, the better! People simply love sensationalism and news reporter will do almost anything to give it to them. Blood, death, catastrophies, killings: all these will make first page news. There are just so many sources of news channels that everyone is competiting for the first place. Sensationalism simply sells!

Unfortunately, many news anchors are more interested in getting high ratings and moving up to the national news shows. Sensationalist news is more interested to the average television viewer. People have a morbid fascination with violence, so the news will play that up, instead of showing tamer news pieces, such as human interest stories. Besides, the news is online now.

I think it's because that's all that's available at this time. With the economy being so bad people are looking for an escape. Unfortunately things that are outside our everday existence, tend to take us away from our own lives.

News organizations write what people want to read. As long as people keep reading and clicking on ridiculous and sensational stories, the news outlets will keep writing them.

Shocking stories and images are what initially attract readers or viewers to papers or news shows. If people aren't intrigued by the news content, they may turn elsewhere, which affects the company's audience and advertising rates.
