It is normal for most alarms to have a light that blinks every few minutes to let you know the battery is still good. However if it starts to make sounds the it typically means either there is a problem with the alarm or the batteries are dying. You should consult the owners manual to find out what exactly.

This could mean that it has detected smoke. If there is no fire, then it probably means that either the detector has malfunctioned or you need to replace the battery.
