Many smoke alarms are battery operated, and those that are hard wired usually have battery back-up. Chirping means the battery needs to be replaced -- this is a safety feature so you will know when to change the battery. If that does not solve the problem, you may need a new alarm.

Smoke alarms normally chirp when it is time to change your battery, the chirping is an indication that the battery is running low and is a warning that time has come to replace the battery. If the chirping continues after you change the battery contact your fire department to check them for you.

If you are on a battery it needs to be changed. If your smoke alarm is hard wired then there can be a short in the system and you might need to replace the entire unit. The chirp is a warning that the unit is not functioning at its full capacity.
