It's probably just timid and trying to adjust to a new home. Show it plenty of affection and allow it to become accustomed to its new home in its own time. If it's adopted, chances are its previous home wasn't so nice, so let it know you're a loving owner!

some cats are really shy. they are just like people. its hard to get used to new people and a new environment. you should put food and water out, make sure the litter box is ready and just let him or her come out when its ready. they will come out when they are hungry.
