This can be due to a faulty or failing seal in the flushing mechanisms. Toilet repair is pretty easy, and replacement parts are usually preferred over attempted to repair a part inside the toilet. Also, it's possible that the chain typically connected to the flush handle could be snagged or tangled. Lift the lid to inspect the chain.

Check to make sure there is no obstruction preventing the toilet from flushing. You can go to home depot, and purchase a "snake" to make sure it is clear of any obstructions. Also, check to make sure the chain that allows water into the toilet is properly connected. Simply remove the back cover of the toilet and check.

It is difficult to flush your toilet probably because the chain that connects the lift arm to the flapper is too long, therefore the flapper won't pull up when the toilet is flushed. Another cause could be that there is a leak in the seal of the flapper, you can easily replace all of these parts for minimal cost.

If you have already given the toilet a good plunge with no effect I would suggest trying any household drain and pipe cleaning product like Drano. If that does not work you may need to have the pipes snaked or may have the beginning of a root intrusion problem.

Maybe it is difficult to flush your toilet because the handle is loose. There is a screw on the back of the toliet handle which could be loose.

The lever may be stuck and may need a little cleaning. The water inlet or outlet could be clogged - will need to be cleared.

It is difficult to flush your toilet because there has been pressure built up in the tank. That is why it is difficult. You may consider replacing the tank for lighter use.
