A thick and scabbed tattoo is probably a sign that the tattoo has become infected. This may have been from the tattoo shop being unsanitary or reusing needles.

Completely untrue, scabs on tattoos can be result from many different reasons, heavy hand, not washed right away, using ointments rather than lotions, using too much lotion/ointment instead of thin layer etc... DO NOT moisturize at this point and let it dry heal, use warm compress to relieve tension.  add a comment

It's not infected if it's not red. It is normal for your tattoo to scab. Don't pick it, let it fall off naturally. Wash it and use Vitamin A-D ointment (found in the baby section in Target) on it a couple times a day and it will be fine.

It is possible that the needle went too deep. Rub neosporin (the ointment kind not the cream) into it 3 times a day. cover it with a bandage.

When you get a tattoo you are esentially being stabbed hundreds of times. The tattoo will scab over, become raised and "heal" before it looks like a normal tattoo.

If it's a new tattoo, this is part of the healing process. Make sure you use a cream like Bepanthen two or three times a day to help it.

In the first couple of weeks of a tattoo your tattoo will act much like a deep cut. It will heal if you get ointment on it.

its part of the healing process... the scabbing is going to happen no matter what, just make sure not to pick at it. i've used diaper rash cream on mine to keep it moisturized, which has worked really well
