Question by  claire (34)

Why has my four year old started lying about everything?

I want to think he's just making up stories, but he says all kinds of things that aren't true as if they were!

Lying is a form of imagination and creativity. By telling lies, he can test his ability to get one over on you, too, which puts him in a position of great power. It's normal. How you handle it is what will make the difference later on.

It is the current developmental stage that he is at. Four year olds have a need to test their boundaries and one way is by lying.

Between the ages of 3 and 4 are when children tend to realize that their personal thoughts are their own. Up until that point, they assume that you know everything that they do. They start lying and fibbing once they figure out that their internal voice is silent and private.

The parents are the reason for this problem. When he asks somthing, we dodge him by saying that we are busy. When he goes to school he sees other children say something which he does't have access. This natrually makes him feel small. To escape from such diappointments the child starts to tell llies to feel happy.
