Your child is getting attention for spitting. Children love attention, whether it is for positive or negative behavior. Ignore bad behavior and reward good behavior.

Often at the age of five children do what works, if spitting on your furniture gets the attention he or she is needing, bad or good then they are going to spit on the furniture. At age five they are old enough to understand that this is something we do not do.
