It is difficult to tell for sure, but there are often visual clues such as touching his nose, not making eye contact, and other unusual body language signs. Sometimes statements are contradicting each other, the person is defensive or changes the subject.

You check on the consistency of the story given and do not interrupt. Keep in mind what is told and latter ask the for the same and you will most likely get a different version of the same story.
