Kearns-Sayre is a genetic disorder that is "sex-linked:" mother pass it on to their kids but dads do not. Color blindness and baldness are two common sex linked traits.

Kearns-Sayre is a mitochondrial disorder, not a sex linked trait. Only mothers pass it on to their children because only the egg's mitochondria remains after fertilization, because the sperm's mitochondria is in the tail, which is shot off after fertilization. It is not necessarily a sex-linked trait.  add a comment

Its just a genetic disease that is not carried over by the father. genetics are very complex it takes years of studying to fully understand why genes are passed on.

Likely because it is a trait that is inherited on the X chromosome. For a boy, who gets a Y from his dad, he gets his only X from his mother. Daughters are less likely to show symptoms because they have 2 X chromosomes, raising the ability to cope.
