Why does the muscle over my ribs hurt?

It could probably be a muscle strain caused by the fall. However, you would need to make sure that it isn't a rib fracture or others by doing an x-ray.

There can be many reasons for this one is some minor rib fracture another majour reason for this can be is intercostal neuralgia i. e pain in intercoastal muscles that surrounds ribs. During and injury some of these muscles can also overstretched which may also cause this pain but to know exactly we have to diagnose the proper reason for this pain

When falling you could of bruise that area or stretched the muscles over your ribs which will cause them to hurt.

Basketball playing will often cause the muscles over the ribs to hurt as they are streched in many ways not normally done.
