Why does the fan cut on for the PS3?

Do you mean the fan cutting off or turning on? The fan simply helps to cool your PS3 and will turn on and off depending on the temperature of your PS3. I think it has a temperature detector that controls this fan action.

Are you telling us that your PS3 fan is noisy - could be loose bearings or a slightly bent fan blade. It's pretty easy to change one. A noisy fan makes it very obvious when it turns and off and can be annoying.

Don't really worry about it unless you find that your PS3 is overheating. If it does get your fan checked - sometimes just removing some dirt and muck from the fan or vents sets it right again.

Because the system is building up heat. The fan helps keep the internal components from overheating, which helps both with performance and longevity. It will typically turn on at start up as a test, then will turn on as the system heats. It will usually stay on as long as you are running your machine.
